St Raphaël, an aperitif made with cinchona, bitter orange and vanilla, enjoyed immediate success
upon its creation in Lyon in 1890. Applying advanced marketing techniques, the brand made a name
for itself at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair by using an advertising hot air balloon painted in its colors.
This opalex ashtray illustrates St Raphaël’s marketing strategy: screen-printed with the names of the
Grand Café des Allobroges in Lyon and its owner, Mr. Montolon, it bears a six-digit telephone
number indicating a distribution period between 1955 and 1970.
